The father’s day headlines portraying John Atkinson, a 39 year-old lung cancer survivor invited to play at Torrey Pines after winning the Golf Digest U.S. Open Challenge, were enough to bring tears to many eyes. Having spoken to John personally, those tears became waterfalls of admiration and respect.
I have to credit John with pouring rocket fuel on my desire to raise awareness about lung cancer. He is a strong supporter of the Lung Cancer Alliance, the only organization committed entirely to support for those living with lung cancer. His efforts to educate others about lung cancer, while he himself is in the midst of treatment, are humbling. Yet, his own humility is even more inspiring. After our conversation, I felt like I had been ministered to and healed - and I don't have cancer!
For golfers out there, John told me that many of the lessons he has learned from golf have given him tools to deal with his cancer. I think it is time for golf lessons! Yet he does not credit golf alone for his positive attitude and stamina. He says his strong faith and the support of his wife and children have been critical.
About.com’s Guide to Patient Empowerment, Trisha Torrey, covers this remarkable man and story here: John Atkinson’s Golf, Lung Cancer and Lessons for Us Patients. And, our About.com Guide to Palliative Care, Angela Morrow adds more In Golf and Cancer, Never Give Up.
