Asbestos exposure is the sole cause of mesothelioma. In fact, the combination of smoking and asbestos exposure is even more deadly. Research indicates that smokers who are exposed to asbestos are 90 times more likely to develop lung cancer than people who do not smoke. Unfortunately, there is no cure for mesothelioma. However, there are several new treatments that will be available soon. Your doctor can use a number of procedures to actually diagnosis mesothelioma. Early detection is the key to treatment. Treatment can consist of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. In addition, doctors can do a Pleurectomy to remove the tumors and surrounding tissue. Also, doctors are now using phototherapy to specifically target cancer cells with dye.
